இணைய தளத்தில் அரசியல் கட்சிகள் : அதிமுக முன்னணி

சோசியல் நெட்வொர்க் தளங்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவதிலும், இணையதளத்தை அரசியல் பிரச்சாரத்துக்கான ஒரு தளமாகப் பயன்படுத்துவதிலும், த்மிழக அரசியல் கட்சிகள் மிகவும் பின் தங்கியே உள்ளன. ஆலை இல்லாத ஊரில் இலுப்பைப் பூ சர்க்க்ரையாவது போல, இணையத்தையே பயன்படுத்தாத அரசியல் கட்சிகள் மத்தியில், அதிமுக சார்பில் பேஸ் புக்கில் சில முயற்சிகள் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளதாக நியூ இந்தியன் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் கட்டுரை குறிப்பிடுகின்றது.
ஆனால், மேற்கு வங்கத் தேர்தலில் திரிணமூல் காங்கிரஸ் இந்த விஷயத்தில் முன்னணியில் இருப்பதாகவும், ஹாட்பெயில் நிறுவனரான சபீர் பாட்டியாவை இதற்கென மம்தா பயன்படுத்தியிருப்பதாகவும், தி இந்துவில் வெளியான கட்டுரை குறிப்பிடுகின்றது.
இணையத்திற்கும், அரசியல் கட்சிகளுக்கும் வெகு தூரமென்றால், தமிழ் பத்திரிகைகளுக்கு அது ரொம்ப்ரொம்ப தூராமான விஷயமே யாகும். இணைய்த்தில் தமிழக அரசியல் கட்சிகள் ஏன் பிரச்சாரத்தை நடத்தவில்லை என்பது ப்ற்றியோ, அதற்கு என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும் என்பது குறித்தோ, தமிழ்ச் சூழலில் எந்தப் பதிவும் காணப் படவில்லை.

Facebook, Orkut and Twitter — the new face of the campaign in West Bengal

Screenshots of the official websites of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Trinamool Congress With the electoral bugle having been sounded, candidates and their supporters in West Bengal have begun their door-to-door campaigns. Much less noisily, a parallel campaign is underway, in which poll graffiti is scribbled on the ‘walls' of social networking sites and mute slogans raised on netizens' profiles.
Political parties and their supporters are relying on cyber-campaigns to reach out to an increasingly tech-savvy electorate like never before. While senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders have opened personal accounts on popular social networking sites to directly interact with voters, the Trinamool Congress has roped in Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia as a consultant to develop its web-campaign tactics.
A recent Calcutta High Court order that restricts the use of microphones for campaign purposes till April 13 due to the ongoing board examinations has only intensified the cyber-campaign. Interestingly, the use of the Internet as a poll forum is not limited to political leaders and workers. Those who do not have any connection with politics have begun holding online discussion forums, conducting polls and writing blogs.
Communities discussing the elections, political issues and the possible outcome populate social networking sites such as Facebook, Orkut and Twitter.
Most of the participants are in the 18-40 age group. The messages posted on these forums make for interesting and informative reading, though at times it borders on the offensive.

That the veil of secrecy on one's political loyalty is a thing of the past is reflected in an increasing number of Facebook members openly flaunting their allegiance in the form of ‘PicBadges' — users make badges with symbols of their favourite party or pictures of leaders and pin them to their profiles.
Party websites have become more informative, interactive and are continually updated by dedicated cyber-teams.
While the website www.cpimwb.org.in is a frontrunner, designed exclusively for the 2011 Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress is trying to catch up by revamping its official site, www.aitmc.org, so that it becomes more election-friendly and interactive.
With the option of posting questions, suggestions and opinions on both sites, the parties claim that an average of 50,000 people from across the world visit the sites every month; the figure is expected to rise significantly with elections round the corner.
The other major parties in the State like the West Bengal Pradesh Congress and the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, however, seem to be lagging behind in the cyber race, relying instead on their national websites to do the needful.

AIADMK way ahead of DMK in social networking

 VELLORE: While the numbers doing the rounds ahead of the Assembly election remain a mere speculation at this point, the AIADMK seems to have an unassailable lead over the rival DMK in one bastion: Facebook! A cursory search for the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on the social networking site brings up as many as 55 pages dedicated to the party. The DMK, on the other hand, has a meagre five pages, of which two look dubious and inactive. Funnily enough, if one were to type the words ‘Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’ and run a Facebook search, the first (and only) link that appears is to the AIADMK page!  The AIADMK pages have a steady group of fans who tune into all the anti-DMK content that these pages host constantly.  Going a step ahead, over 19 party leaders and functionaries have easily accessible FB pages that are reasonably up to date and contain manifesto information and local campaign schedules. While it is questionable whether veterans like C Ponnaiyan, O Paneerselvam and Agri Krishnamoorthy actually maintain their pages, at least they are visible on the world’s most viewed network.The DMK Youth Wing page (‘liked’ by 572 users) is the party’s only saving grace online, thanks to the vigorous photo uploads of campaigns by Hasan Mohamed Jinnah, their candidate in the Thousand Lights constituency.It does help that the AIADMK’s online campaigning is assisted by private ‘non-affiliated’ groups. ElectADMK, a team of five volunteers, had also web-campaigned for the AIADMK in 2006 and has now stepped it up, with the growth in Internet use in Tamil Nadu. ElectADMK’s FB page (‘liked’ by 3,068 users) generates ‘Amma-centric’ news by the hour. Mahesh, their founder says, “We are in no way connected to the party. We are regular people with day jobs who believe Amma returning to power is the best thing and we are supporting that.” Another website www.voteforamma.com, run by former film distributor Nag Ravi, claims that 34,235 people have ‘clicked’ in support so far.

TN: Poorer ministers and richer better halfs

CHENNAI: A majority of the incumbent cabinet of Tamil Nadu has one thing in common. Seventeen of the 28 ministers, who are contesting the coming election, are poorer than their spouses. Apart from heading the cabinet, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi also leads the roost of ministers with richer better halfs.The poorest among these 17 ‘poorer’ ministers is Fisheries Minister KPP Samy. In his affidavit for elections, he has declared assets of Rs 16.99 lakh and Rs 66.28 lakh for his wife, Uma Samy. He does not own a car, while his wife owns a Mahindra Scorpio, purchased on a bank loan. Uma Samy also owns 720 gms of gold.Leading the cabinet on the rich-spouse front is Karunanidhi. His assets amount to a paltry Rs 4.92 crore compared to the double whammy of his wives, who boast of combined assets of a whopping Rs 39.42 crore. Between the three of them, they have only one car, owned by Dayalu Ammal.Another minister whose two wives pull their economic weight at home is Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S Arumugam. With assets worth Rs 75.18 lakh, there may not be too much difference from his wife, A Ranganayaki, who has Rs 93 lakh. But even the two of them together fall short of his other wife,  A Leela, who owns assets worth Rs 2.25 crore.Leela owns the only car between the three of them, a BMW sedan worth Rs 31 lakh. Mentioned in the affidavit as a businesswoman and agriculturist, Leela owns property in T Nagar and Panayur in Chennai and a whopping 38000 sq ft property in Sirugumi. She owns 2528 gms of gold, while Ranganayaki owns none.But the relative poverty strikes other ministers wider. N Selvaraj’s wife Krishnammal is 10 times richer than him with assets Rs 3.67 crore. Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy is worth only 1/7th of this wife, Visalakshi, who owns Rs 7.14 crore.Wives of Ministers like Durai Murugan and Suresh Rajan were not only richer than their husbands, they are also major share holders in private companies. While Duraimurugan’s wife Shantakumari has invested Rs 1.39 crore in Rajama exports, Suresh Rajan’s wife Bharathi has shares worth Rs 1.20 crore of NSR Steels Private Limited.Even as a clear trend emerges, where ministers own little but their spouses own much, one minister emerges richer than his wife, but way poorer than his son. Transport Minister KN Nehru owns assets worth Rs 1.21 crore, while his son Arun Nehru’s assets amount to Rs 15.74 crore, 13 times more than his  father.Not just assets, a majority of the ministers also listed liabilities for their spouses, leaving little or nothing for themselves.Poongothai beats hubbyOf the three women ministers in the cabinet, only IT Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna is richer than her spouse, with Rs 9.75 crore. A substantial part of her assets constitute of land she has inherited. Poongothai and her husband also own property in two villages along the IT corridor. The other two women, Adi Dravidar Welfare Minister A Tamilarasi and Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan, both own lesser than their husbands. While the asset gap between Tamilarasi, with Rs 27.68 lakh, is close behind her realtor husband Ravikumar, it is wide between Geetha Jeevan and her husband Jeevan Jacob Rajendran. While the Social Welfare Minister’s assets amount to Rs 18.84 lakh, Jeevan Jacob owns Rs 2.64 crore. While none of the women own a car, between them they own a combined 1,700 gms, with Poongothai owning no gold at all.

Neta watch: Low on education, high in wealth

MADURAI: While many in the government have been making appeals to the electorate to exercise their franchise to make India a participatory democracy and not merely a representative one, here are insights about choices before you to take a call on April 13, 2011.With modest qualifications, many of the candidates of the two main alliances are rich by all imaginable standards of living and income, reaffirming a known reality that politics is the most lucrative profession.  Talking of qualifications, three candidates who really take the cake for their disclosures in their affidavits are: A K Bose of the AIADMK, A K T Raja of the DMDK and M Kumaralingam of the BJP. They have declared that they could either not pursue MA or failed in the examinations, but no one knows what else they have to their credit. Many others were probably too busy after plunging into politics that they had little time for something trivial like studies. Except for S Syed Ghouse Basha (DMK, Madurai Central), all other nominees from the ruling party seem to have never shown any interest in studies. The AIADMK is similar to its rival in many ways. As for wealth, it is truly mind-boggling, despite most of them declaring themselves to be either engaged in agriculture or politics for livelihood. For instance, Ko Thalapathy (DMK, Madurai West) and a farmer-cum-politician, has a combined wealth of Rs 5.73 crore. Of course, given his apparent clout and the delays in India’s judicial process, FIRs registered against him in 2002 have not made any headway, giving him the much-needed leeway to contest elections. His counterpart from the AIADMK, is well-educated with a postgraduate degree and is much below in the wealth sweepstakes.Madurai East candidates from the two archrivals, P Moorthy (DMK) and A Thamilarasan (AIADMK) present a contrasting picture. Both of them are farmers by profession, but differ in all other parameters.

Alagiri convoy ‘ignores’ tahsildar’s order

MADURAI: The AIADMK on Sunday alleged DMK South Zone Organising Secretary M K Alagiri to having carried money to bribe voters in Melur constituency. Alagiri came to Melur with his supporters in a convoy to hold discussions with Congress functionaries at the MP Office, to brighten up the chances of DMK candidate Rani, widow of former MLA KVV Rajamanickam, in the elections.Sources said money in two bags was transferred from a car without a registration number to the one belonging to Rani. Immediately, the AIADMK passed on the information to Melur tahsildar Kalimuthu. Before he could reach the spot, the candidate’s car reportedly left for Kottampatti. The tahsildar rushed to a check-post near Melur to stop the vehicles, but none of them, including that of Alagiri, halted to the signal from tahsildar. The Kottampatti inspector was informed, but the cars took a diversion avoiding Kottampatti check-post.Based on representations from the AIADMK, Expenditure Observer H Moharana ordered seizure of the car. However, a vehicle check revealed only a few towels and shawls. A case was registered for violation of poll code under section 171(E) and 511(i) of IPC, read with Section 123 of the Representation of the People Act. Surprisingly, even after tahsildar’s endorsement, Alagiri and Moorthy MLA were not booked. Instead, four unnamed persons were booked under the same sections for not cooperating with tahsildar during vehicle check.
